Success is comprised of multiple factors, but even before those factors come into play, it
is your beliefs that determine how much success you’ll allow yourself to have. If you
hold limiting beliefs, they will inevitably limit your success. You might not even attempt
certain things because you don’t believe you can succeed. As humans, our
experiences shape our belief systems. These experiences trigger emotions, and
emotionally charged experiences create powerful neural pathways, or memories.
These, in turn, become the lens through which you view life.
Sometimes we have accumulated fears that hold us back without a clear memory of
when that fear was introduced. It’s quite possible to have limiting beliefs without
conscious awareness of them. The good news is that it’s entirely possible to overcome
these limiting beliefs and create new pathways to success, but it requires conscious
effort.
Often, we look at the success of others and assume they possess some unique gift or
advantage that we simply don’t have. We may decide not to try certain things, believing
it’s pointless based on our genetics or position in life or our history. You can change this
mindset and literally “stack the deck” in your favor. Brain research shows that our
subconscious mind dictates what our conscious mind pays attention to. Without
examining the filter, you’ll miss opportunities for successful change, focusing, instead,
on the way it’s always been.
The concept of manifestation states that you get more of what you focus on. While this
may seem hokey, there is growing scientific evidence of this truth. In his book Mind
Magic, neuroscientist James Doty explains, “manifesting is defining an intention in such
a way that it becomes embedded in our subconscious... By doing so, we activate brain
networks tied to goal orientation.” These networks then work toward the goal 24/7, even
when we aren’t consciously thinking about it. The truth is, we’re all manifesting
intentions all the time; we just may not be consciously directing that focus.
Writing down your goals increases your chances of achieving them by an impressive
50%. If you add affirmations and visualization to the mix, your chances go up even more
as the message to your subconscious becomes persistent and clear. Engaging the
subconscious mind in goal setting yields incredible results. Suddenly, opportunities that
were invisible become clear. For instance, if you want a new black Jaguar sports car,
you’ll start noticing them everywhere. They’ve always been there, but your brain
previously filtered them out as irrelevant information. It’s only when you signal its
importance that your brain lifts the filter.
By actively examining and then consciously shaping your beliefs, proactively
establishing goals and aligning your subconscious with these goals, you can literally
stack the deck in favor of your success.
