The Way to High Performing Teams
Why Great Teams Need the Freedom to Fail
For nearly four decades, Marianne Boone has worked with people and teams to improve performance. After years of leading large global teams, she discovered something important: having a good strategy, talented people, and proven processes does not always create a high-performing organization.
Sometimes, what is missing is a culture where people feel safe enough to speak up.
Turning Leadership Experience Into a New Mission
In 2023, Marianne launched Front Range Leadership Development to bring the lessons she learned throughout her career to leaders and organizations across different industries.
A major focus of her work is psychological safety. Marianne believes teams perform better when people can openly discuss ideas, concerns, mistakes, and failures without feeling they need to hide them.
During her conversation with Nick Elder on the Mile High Success Podcast, Marianne shared a striking example from the microprocessing industry. During a facility remodel, hundreds of lots of failed chips were discovered hidden beneath a floor. Employees had apparently been reluctant to bring those failures forward.
For Marianne, the bigger issue was the lost opportunity to learn. If failures stay hidden, organizations may repeat the same mistakes instead of understanding and fixing them.
Innovation Requires Failure
Marianne believes failure and innovation are closely connected.
Businesses are changing quickly, especially as new technology and artificial intelligence reshape the workplace. Leaders cannot see everything happening throughout an organization. They need employees to bring problems and ideas into the conversation.
That requires an environment where discussing failure is accepted as part of learning and improvement.
The Boone Framework
Marianne developed the Boone Framework to help organizations turn these ideas into action.
The framework starts by benchmarking where an organization stands against its goals. It then focuses on creating open dialogue, operationalizing what needs to change, neutralizing blockers, and encouraging evolution.
The goal is to help businesses understand what is really happening inside their organization and build a culture that can keep learning and adapting.
Marianne is also preparing to release her first book, Creator’s Kindergarten, which explores self-awareness, growth, and the ability people have to help shape the lives they want.
